Wren: Four to Five

Since Wren's last "update" was when she was three, I would say it's time to get caught up!
Wren is a force to be reckoned with. She is fierce and determined, and so wildly intelligent that it's hard to keep up with her. She can never take anything at face value and needs to understand every facet of every problem that she in confronted with. One question usually generates five more, and she will not quit the interrogation until she has fully grasped a concept. She is exhausting, but also exhilarating, and there is no time for rest when Wren is around. She keeps me motivated and doesn't allow anyone around her to become stagnant. Her Dad and I are SO incredibly proud of her accomplishments, and even though her strong personality can be a bit overwhelming for the faint of heart, we wouldn't change one thing about her. She is truly impressive and will change the world, I am convinced.

Height: No idea. Tall?

Weight: 35 pounds (still tiny as ever)

Milestones:
Where to start? As always, Wren tends to grasp really difficult concepts well above her expected comprehension levels. At five years old, she is REALLY into all things science and can explain various processes with surprising detail. She can teach you all about plate tectonics, the water cycle, the scientific process, and can identify any cloud formation in the sky (her favorite is the cumulonimbus because it's "fluffy"). She has known all of her letters/letter sounds since she was three, but is recently working on beginning letter sounds, and starting to sound words out. In January, she entered a Spanish immersion program, and her language acquisition is coming along nicely. She knows her Spanish alphabet, both capital and lowercase letters, can count to 20, can identify all or her colors and shapes, and knows simple phrases. Although math is not her favorite subject, she also excels in that arena as well. She LOVES the "Starfall" app on her iPad, but gets bored with kindergarten math. She much prefers the 2nd grade section and is especially good at adding several, multi digit numbers together at once. Wren is also becoming quite the teacher. She often sets up and designs activities for her brother, and loves nothing more than to teach him the concepts behind it. If you were to ask her what she wants to be when she grows up, she would happily respond, "a teacher, like Mommy!"

Loves:
Wren loves all things sparkly, pink, and flashy. She loves to play dress up, and will often click around the wood floors in her plastic high heels. More than anything, Wren loves to play "make believe." Barbies, dolls, stuffed-animals, plastic figurines (Peppa Pig is her favorite)...really anything can become the star of her elaborate, made-up scenarios. Mom's favorite part of her pretend play are the voices that she gives to all of her characters. It's pretty entertaining. Wren also loves when Mom sets up their daily "activities." This can include an art project, a science experiment, or baking in the kitchen. It (typically) doesn't matter what the activity is, Wren is immediately invested and jumps in with gusto. She loves nothing more than being able to play and create right alongside Mom. Her favorite activities usually involve some kind of difficult-to-explain scientific process. She loves being able to try to figure out what has created the reaction or the cause and effect behind it. On the subject of science, Wren's current favorite book series is "Zoey and Sassafras." She is so fascinated by all of the science mysteries that the main characters explore, and like Zoey, often sets up her own science experiments...following the steps of the scientific process, of course! Like her brother, Wren also LOVES to be outside, especially when she is able to ride her new peddle bike. She especially loves going on "adventures" with Dad, and is ALWAYS down for a camping trip. She has recently discovered a passion for hiking, but only considers is a "real" hike if she is going uphill (which is the opposite of what her brother likes).

Hates:
Wren has always had a strong personality. She knows what she likes. And she DEFINITELY knows what she doesn't like. Wren has always been a very obedient kid and is the definition of "rule keeper." So, one of her biggest pet peeves is when other people don't follow the rules. She has no qualms correcting the behaviors of others (like mother, like daughter), and tends to get frustrated if people don't immediately correct their actions. She likes to be in control of most situations, and when she feels like she has lost control, she can lose her temper. Wren has big emotions, but those big reactions are mostly rare and short-lived. She is also very logical, and when things are explained to her, she can accept frustrating outcomes (even if she doesn't like it). Wren also recently experienced a big loss in her young life (her Grandpa J), which was (and continues to be) very difficult for her. Because she has to understand big concepts (and takes NOTHING at face value), she has been working through her comprehension and acceptance of death and loss. There have been a lot of growing pains associated with that loss, but her Mom and Dad have been SO proud of the big strides she has made and how mature she has been through the process.

Wren is a powerhouse. There's no other way to put it. She does everything at full speed and never slows down. It's hard to capture the essence of Wren in a few short paragraphs. Her personality is just too big. And that's just the way we like her!
